GF COMIC | Talk No Use ...

Another everyday observation.

** Feel free to copy and paste, for non-commercial purposes only, but please do not alter in it anyway.

In the midst of the Flu A H1N1, everybody seems to be taken some precautions, by getting some sanitisers, face mask and such, so one day during lunch, some time before the fasting month, saw this guy wearing face mask, but ironically, there is a lit cigarette on his hand!!

And despite, the Non-Smoking in public areas By-Law, still saw many patrons puffing those toxic fume, especially in those al-fresco dining, and the fumes is equally harmful to those non-smokers sitting next table!

So Please, look at the man in the mirror.

AN-NUR | Ramadhan | Eat or Pray First?

Ramadhan, the 9th month in the Islamic Calendar, is the month where Muslim all over the world are fasting for a certain duration of the day.

Brunei starts fasting today, whereas the neighbouring countries i.e. Indonesia, Malaysia & Singapore started yesterday.

Each Muslim community throughout the world, have their own way(with accordance of the Islamic ways) in determining the 1st of Ramadhan.

In Brunei, the sighting of the moon is use to determine the starts of Ramadhan and another sighting will also going to be held to determine the starts of Syawal.

If the "new moon" is sighted, then the 1st day of the next Islamic Month will starts the next day, otherwise, it will starts the day after.

Masjid Al-Ameerah Al-Hajah Mariam, Jerudong, one of the major mosques in Brunei, taken from the 1.3mp camfone.

During the whole of Ramadhan, definitely there will be an increase number of religious activities.

One of them is the offering of food for the breaking of fast, or also known as Sungkai.

I would like to share some insight regarding Sungkai and praying.

This statement (In Malay) is by the Perlis State's Mufti, Malaysia, please take note, (what I always wanted to stress to those sungkai's host but they seem to not understand, mun paham bisai)

Ini berdasarkan apa yang dinyatakan dalam hadis-hadis baginda Nabi s.a.w. antaranya: Daripada Anas bin Malik r.a.: Bahawa Rasulullah s.a.w. bersabda:

“Apabila telah dihidangkan makan malam, maka mulakanlah ia sebelum kamu menunaikan solat Maghrib, dan jangan kamu tergopoh-gapah ketika makan malam kamu.”

(Riwayat Bukhari dan Muslim).

Dalam hadis yang lain daripada Abdullah bin Umar, Baginda s.a.w. bersabda:

Apabila dihidangkan makan malam seseorang kamu, sedangkan solat (jamaah) telah didirikan, maka mulailah dengan makan malam. Janganlah dia tergopoh-gapah sehinggalah dia selesa.”

(Riwayat Bukhari dan Muslim).

Riwayat di atas juga menambah:

Bahawa Ibn Umar r.a. apabila dihidangkan untuknya makanan, manakala solat pula sedang didirikan, maka beliau tidak mendatangi solat melainkan hingga beliau selesai makan, sedangkan beliau mendengar bacaan imam.

(An-Nawawi, Syarh Sahih Muslim, 4/208, cetakan: Dar al-Khair, Beirut).

(al-Munawi, Faidh al-Qadir, 1/295, cetakan: al-Maktabah al-Tijariyyah al-Kubra, Mesir).

So tau tah kamu tu mengapa inda ku tepakai mun orang memanggil sungkai, then suruh nya sembahyang Mahgrib berjemaah dulu, lain kali mun kan memanggil, biar tia makan/sungkai dulu, siapa kan sembahyang, sembahyang, sapa kan makan, makan, lagi pun awal abis, dapat awal ready kan sembahyang Isya/Terawih!

Sekian Terima Kasih.

Wallahuaklam bisawaf.

RANDOM | iRambut for $39.99

Could not help noticing this particular person's hairstyle, perhaps, he got the inspirational idea from Sanjaya of Americal Idol, and to which I also have an idea of composing it like that once famous ads, and still is.

I bet, when people see his hair people will say: "Ai Rambutnya ah ... atu nya! ", hence the title iRambut!

Not so sure how much it cost to style it as such, but the amount was intentional, just to mock the latest craze in grocery adverts, i.e. .99 this and .99 that!

People will thought, " iRambutnya tiga puluh labih saja! ", (thirty something only), when in fact, it is $40!

So customer beware, caveat emptor!

RANDOM | Hold-on

Holding On.

Hold-On Tight.

Holding Tight.

These may sounds the same, but do they really mean the same.

Some smart English teacher might disagree with me, or might wanna argue with me, well you are more than welcome.

Anyway, from my understanding, Holding On, is like, eerrm Holding On, i.e. Lewis is still holding on to what his mentor had taught him, not to flirt with danger.

While, Hold on tight, is like, when the bus driver tried to overtake the Nissan Skyline, he asked the passenger to Hold-on tight, so that they will not be thrown over board.

Then Holding Tight, is holding, grasping something tightly.

So Hold-On, what does the above photo represent, neither, the hands are actually stroking the arrows!

RANDOM | Tutup Kedai?

I guess, by now, most of the locals would have heard about this new huge franchise supermarket coming to town.

Is it good for the economy or not, that is not what I am going to discuss about here.

But whatever it is, one should grab all the opportunities and learn some business tactics from such regional, if not global, players.

The way how they market themselves, luring and having some MOU's with the local SMEs, creating job opportunities for the locals, plus some spill-off effect that other business gain from it.

Just by looking at their adverts, some "small shops" might step back (kira gagar, macam kalah sebelum bertanding), as some of the ads are spotted as far as more than 10KM radius, up to the border Kuala Lurah, and even to the neighbouring country i.e. Malaysia! ( mun inda caya agatah liat sendiri.)

Mother and child walking pass a closed shop.

Such competition exist everywhere, not only in business, but also in schools and offices etc.

A competitive world have two options, you can lose, or if you want to win, you can change.

A competitor is good at times, as it can stop you from being too complacent.

Furthermore, no body is perfect, even those huge one have their own weakness, which only those small ones could fulfill.

It is funny how, those customers who like to complaint, they are actually the one who will keeps on coming back for more, compared to those who does not complaint.

NOTE: Oh by the by, the shop on the above photo, is not a direct result of the new opening, but they're close because it was a public holiday. :)

RANDOM | The Unsung Heroes

In any big event, I'd assume not only in Brunei, but the world all over, after any major event, the venue will usually be in a mess, and as if by magic, few hours after that, the venue will then be cleaned.

So what happened?

Don't tell me that it was all clean by some magician, nor it was as easy as clicking the undo button, no such thing in the real world, (how I wish there's such button thou).

Well, what actually was these:

No matter how technologically advance the country is, a dash of manual labour are still required.
Cleaning those hard to reach places.

All those tiny bits and pieces, sweeping all those glitters away.

Then, will only leave the place, after the place is spanking clean.

So, people, please, do not litter as you wish, help them to help our environment.

A big round of applause should be given to these ladies and gentlemen, who are very dedicated in doing there job, no matter how menial it may seems, without them, we won't be enjoying a clean place of living.

I still remember back in the ol' skool days, during those college days, at the usual daily morning assembly, some students complaint to their parents because they were punish to clean the school's toilets (obviously they must have done something wrong, otherwise they won't be punished), hence the Discipline Master made a disclaimer something like this:

"Mengapa mesti malu?... ADAKAH HINA ibu kamu membersihkan jamban di rumah? Adakah hina orang-orang yang bertugas membersihkan tandas?"

Loosely translated as "Why one must be ashamed(to clean the toilet)?, Is it shameful for your mother to clean the toilet back in your home? Is it shameful for those people whose job is to clean the toilets?"

Well, what ever he said, still rings in my head, even after so many years. So ironic ain't it.

P.S. Why does the Discipline Master/Teacher in school have more or less the same name, Cg. Dollah lah, Cg. Abdullah lah or Cg. Ali lah.

RANDOM | Friendship

Just some random thought

Friendship and aging, the older one get, the more friends one will accumulate, unless the person is not popular, then perhaps, people will tend to go away from them.

A friend is someone who is not afraid to tell you, if what you are doing is not right, someone who will tells you the truth, no matter how bitter the reality is.

Whereas aging, it will depends on how one look at themselves, I guess the saying, age is a number, is still correct to some extend.

We are the one who make ourselves young or old. Thinking that you have reached a certain age, and acting older than your age, does not seems to justify your well being, unless, you want to be old, then that is a different story.

It is good to feel young at heart, despite what age you may be, yet, there is a limit to it.

In age, we are the exclusive members of the ten years club, i.e. we are only allowed to be in a certain age club for only a period of ten years max,.

So which ever age club you are in, be it the 20's club, the 30's club, the 40's club or what ever club you may be, just make yourself comfortable.

It is funny thou, a small kid always wanna be a grown-up, a youth obviously wanna stay in their youth, and grown-ups most of the time wanna be kids again.

Why wanna be a kid? ... coz it is troublefree... what Bruneian always called "Abis Bank".

RANDOM | Face the Music

Song & rhythm are meant to be together.

A simple note can make or break the music.

On a different note, I had the opportunity to be invited to the High Schools' National Patriotic Choir competition.

Watching and listening to the choir performances was really something.

During my school days, I always wanted to join the choir, or just to join anything that could represent the school.

I might have represented the school in few occasions, but not the choir.

Oh well, back to the choir competition, it was quite an enjoyable event, listening to the harmonious voices singing those patriotic songs, injected more "patriotistic" boost to your body system!

Not only that, but they are now more innovative with their showmanship, not only the hands are moving but the whole body as well!

A big round of applause for their dedicated teachers in conducting their rehearsal for their performances.

As well as all of the participants, and congrats to the winners.

BRUNEI | NDP | Begagas Sulnya

For the past so n so years, the national day celebrations were held at the same venue i.e. Taman SOAS, as such, the modus operandi were almost the same year thru year.

Hence the challenge in photographing such event, is how to capture it differently, finding new perspective, a different view from the others, and most importantly, to make it different from the one that we ourselves took during the previous years.

Some of the photos, have already been taken by the others, or yourself previously, so need to find something new.

The colourful march.

I was browsing thru my past National Day Parade photos, and I know I have not taken such shot as the above.

So go ahead, and challenge your own selves. :)

BRUNEI | NDP | At Ease yet Ready

White gloves can represent anything, thou it is usually worn by uniformed personnel, but it can also be worn by waitresses, or by magician or even Micheal Jackson!

Thou the later only wore a single glove.

The one with the white gloves.

Speaking of which, by now, the local community would have heard about the incident regarding this guy who wanted to leap off the overhead pedestrian crossing at the busy Gadong Road yesterday (29.02.2008).

I personally think that, this guy is confuse, very confuse, he has taken the term "Leap Year" literally, so since it was a "Leap" February this year, hence he tried to "leap-it-off"!

And, some interesting fact about leap year, why February 29? Why not January 32 or so.

It was told, that during the Roman Empire of Julius & Agustus, they grab the two days off February to make July & August to be 31 days, hence to compensate the shortened February, hence it was chosen to be a part of the leap year.

RANDOM | Mind of the Photographers?

Look at the photo below.

Yeap, it looks just like any other ordinary photo, which anybody can take.

But what I wanna share is this, at the back of the mind of some, they are wondering, what is in the mind of the photographers?

Well, I can tell you this "little".

Now look carefully at the next photo, below.

So now you all tell me what is your interpretation of the photo above. ;)

RANDOM | The Lonely Road

The Lonely Road ahead

So do you recognise this stretch of road?

Oh well, does not really matter, or does it?

Just like our retirement, have we put our mind into it...?

I'm talking about the majority of us, who are no longer in the pensionable scheme.

The rule of thumb for a retirement fund is, one should have at least 10x the annual income by the time they reach retirement age, i.e. 55 years old.

Say the annual income is 10k, hence the minimum retirement fund should be 100K!

And, yet they need consultant, and some smart Alec from the uni to tell us that the present retirement scheme fund is not adequate! ..

..... oh man .. come on .. I know that long time ago .. .without any consultant or such to tell me .... come on lah ... it is common sense.... easy maths .... u don't need to be an Add. Maths nor economist expert to figure it out ....

Speaking of retirement, it is so scary thinking about the current situation.

Have we save enough for retirement? When I said we, that also implies me, no we without me... just like no Woman WithOutMAN .... eeermm... oh what am I saying here....

Oh well... I think what the public need now is more public awareness ... education ... which we can start from the early age ....

... parents especially.. can play an important role in this situation .... unless the parents themselves need to be "educated" ... then .. that is another story ....

.. but can we blame our culture for it ...? or is it just one own self control ...?

... just for example ... if one is to organise a function.. say the ubiquitous wedding function ...

.. if the function was to made to be a simple one... some will be afraid that... the guest would talk behind their back or so .... eleeeeehhh.. so what ... as if they are paying all the expense...

.. it is you money .. so spend the function as to your own limit .... most stuffs are nice to have .... but only few stuffs are must have .... so stick to your budget ....

.. if 5k is your available budget ... then be it ..... don't worry about what other may say ....

... I can give you thousand of sample about spending unnecessarily .. but hmmm.. that will make those in finance area an easier job ....

so ... I'd just stop here.. as I know .. as always .... .. nobody cares to comment about this anyway ... just see see ... just read read ... no participants ... typical of us eh ....

TRAVEL | SINGAPORE | The Other Side

Singapore is one of the popular destination for a holiday, especially for the Bruneians.

Thou some of the items are rather expensive or the same value as in Brunei, yet the wide array of goods made it an attraction to be there.

A view of the city skyline from the other side.

Anyhow, this is what I wanna share after reading Singapore's local paper today, which is regarding their newly proposed national stadium.

5 very unique and marvellous design concepts were presented during the unveiling of the new stadium by 5 different design consortiums.

Each of the different concept were very well presented and illustrated on the paper, with all their sketches, computer graphic designed concept, histories of world stadiums, views from world re-known architects, engineers & designers, best practices and such.

By building the new stadium, it will not only be a centre or hub for sports, but it also act as a landmark for the country, just like what the "durian" Esplanade does for Singapore.

Singapore are now into their goal to be the sporting hub of Asia, have been into lots of discussion with many major sports player around the globe, with the likes of English Football League, Rugby and Cricket etc as well as a bid for the ASIAN Games and Youth Olympic Games.

One of the designs, is a horse-shoe type of stadium, with one end open to view the open seas.

Another one is an i-max type of stadium, where the roof will be movable, and images can be projected to the roof if required, to add more sizzles to the performance.

Then there is this "crumpled-tissue" typed of stadium among others.

Stadiums, have been made an unofficial landmark in many places around the globe, e.g. Wembley in England, then that new "bird-nest" stadium in China, that Allianz arena in Germany just to name a few.

So to wrap this post, what I want to see in the new future is, for Brunei to follow such public illustrated presentation lay-out for its upcoming new airport, if possible let the public choose the design concept.

Since it will gonna be the pride of the nation, so might as well build something better the Singapore's T3 terminal.

Oh, and by the by, please incorporate access and facilities, for people with disabilities, senior citizens and breast-feeding mother, and ah, please install the flight schedule in the restaurant with working P.A. System, so that people will not miss their flight.

Thanks in advance.

TRAVEL | KOREA | Peeping Thru Gyeongbokgung Palace

Traveling out of the country for a while, errmm, just a photo actually.

Having a glimpse of the reknown Gyeongbokgung Palace in Seoul.

Did u know that it is possible to have Breakfast in Korea, Lunch in Hong Kong, then dinner in Brunei?

Speaking of which, after some "research" I think that, eeermm, I can conclude that the local people in Brunei love to eat!

Well, you can see loads of evidence, even it says so in the local media.

Ok let me guide you to some interesting findings.

Just tune in to the local TV, yeap, despite the thousand of channels in the cable TV network, I do still watch the local networks, they are even showing good new series on the 2nd channel, as well as nice Korean Drama!

Anyway, back to the local channel:

First, there this advert regarding car's safety, where they first show a clip of an EGG inside a container, imagine you are an egg they said, then knocking it hard hence breaking the egg. Which correspond to you if you are not wearing your seat belt.

But the irony is that, they never show the egg strapped to the container, so that we can know what happen to the egg, and furthermore, why are they driving fast at that SOASC carpark? Eh, come on lah, show someplace believable.

Second, another advert regarding road safety as well, this time for motorcycle rider, and guess what type of analogy they use this time? Foodstuff as well, i.e. WATERMELON! Watermelon smashed to the road, just like your head without a helmet!

Another advert regarding drug awareness, guess what a conversation on the dining table which obviously involve food and eating!

Then eventually another advert, showing this guy who loves to smoke and EAT a lot, hence giving him some medical complications.

But I still remember some "good" adverts which most of you might still remember, about vandalisms.

One is the one at Damuan, about this bunch of guys vandalising the infrastructure, when one of them get electrocuted trying to pull/ touch a live wire.

And the other one, about these students ( Sekolah Mabohai kali looking at the school) who wanted to go for a toilet break, but could not find a decent toilet, as the toilets were vandalised.

Oh well, obviously we need more interesting adverts, need not go far, just tune to those Indonesian channels, you will find loads of eye-catching ads.

Happy surfing.

RANDOM | Of Blue Glasses

Of blue glasses and blue sky
Are the glasses "colourless" and the colour is just a mere reflection from the sky?
Or,
Or the glasses are really blue?

In fact, it does not really matter;
As what matter most are the end product.

Might be true to human as well,
Does not really matter how many A's you got during your lower classes,
Nor how many distinctions whilst in secondary years;
Or even how many O's and A's you manage to grab during your upper secondary.

At the end of the day, what type of Job you are doing to earn your living.
Will it be the one who design the "blue glasses"?
Or will it be the one who build the "blue-glassed structure"?
Or the one who cleans the glasses?
Or just a passer-by who admire the beauty of the "blue-glasses" and wanted to achieve such feat?
Or perhaps, just someone who took photo of the so called "blue-glasses" then upload and made a poem (if that is what you called) out of it, out of the blue???

So it is up to you, to think of what you wanna be;
We can only plan but our actually destiny and faith, that is not for us to decide.

RANDOM | The Origin of Sushi ...

Did you know that, Sushi was originated from Brunei?

.. look at the photo ... familiar ...? What is it ...? (No ... don't scroll down first ... but oh what the... I know you'll just do it anyhow .... ) ....

... here it goes ...

..... before the World War ... the Japanese ... traveled all over the world to gain knowledge ... yeap ... knowledge ....... no.. nope ... not Knowles ... that is Beyonce Knowles ..... btw ..... knowledge ... in whatever way it might be .... technology .... lifestyle .... including foodstuffs ...

... so during their occupancy in Brunei .... they found out about our local delicacies ... which includes ... yeap .. u guess it .... Pulut Panggang .... ( steamed stuffed rice wrapped in leaves)

.. from the above photo .. u can see there's a whole load of similarities between Brunei's Pulut Panggang ... and the so called Japanese Sushi ....

.. but as time goes by ... and the people .. are more and more innovative ... and of course ... more health concious ... so ... the Japanese .. they improvise the delicacies .... exchange the dried prawn in the pulut panggang to a healthier raw fish or salmon ... then exchange the leave wrap .. to the edible seaweed ....

.. so ladies and gentlemen .... there you go .... the origin of sushi ... believe it or not .... ;)

NOTE: This is based from my research and finding, the actual fact needs to be studied thoroughly.

On the lighter side of life ...

.. have you heard about the concert done by Stevie Wonder.. while he was in
Tokyo Japan ...?

... Stevie Wonder .. has belted out for the past hours his hit songs .. but obviously the audience can't get enough of him ... and from the audience there's this guy shouting ...

.. " A Jazz Chord! ... A Jazz chord!! .. "

... so without hesitation ... thou he's not an actual jazz singer ... played a simple jazz chord on his piano.....

... after he finish the jazz number ..... the crowd "stubbornly" still yells out ....

... " A Jazz Chord!... We want ... A JAZZ CHORD!!!! ... "

... so trying to win the fans ... Stevie tried to play a more complex jazz number .......

.. and after ten minutes or so .. hoping to satisfied his fan .....

... the audience still keeps on shouting for more ..... " A JAZZ CHORD!! ... A JAZZ CHORD!!!"

...... Stevie Wonder ... getting a bit annoyed ... then asked the man in audience to come up to the stage .. and show him ... what he really really want .....

... and the man eagerly run up the stage .. hold the mic .. and sing the song they wanted ...

.... " .. A Jazz chord .... to say ... I ruv u ..... " .....!!??

... jgn marah ah ... ;)

RANDOM | Walking In The Rain ...

... the next few post will gonna be a quick short post ... unless I've got more time to spare ....

... braving the rain ... and despite the slippery pavement ....

... there's a saying in Malay .... "sediakan payung sebelum hujan" .... (prepare your umbrella before it rains) ...

.. I guess... this is true in this case .... but the Malay proverb actually means that ... you should be prepared ... if not much ... at least gain few knowledge ... or to be prepared ... in case something happens ....

.. was suppose to post this before the wedding theme .. anyway ...

.. feeling of self-contentment ... being satisfied with our achievement ... be it ... our personal goal... our career ... in bringing up the family ... or even in finishing our assignments and the likes ....

....Some people are so determined to find blissful happiness..... that they overlook a lifetime of contentment. .....

.. but I guess.. every now and then ... we are allowed to feel such feeling .... the feeling of contentment ....

PORTRAIT | The Pondering Artist ....

Pondering ...

.. pondering of our future ....
... pondering about our mindset ...

.. why can't some people be so grateful ....
.. why can't they be so appreciative ...

... people .. be thankful of what we have now ...
.. appreciate what we are given now ...
.. you just don't know what you got til it's gone ...

... yet .. one can't just sit still and do nothing ...
.. don't just stay there in your comfort zone... being complacent...
.. venture out ... make some bold moves ...

.. helps to develop our nation ...
.. for the betterment of our generation and the next-gen...

(The hengsem guy above is just for illustration purposes... unpaid ... bagi makan saja.. nyaman tah atinya tu ... inda pun ... bawa nyanyi ....cam banar sulnya ah ... . :P )

Pondering ...
How some people don't even know how to use the 3-lanes roundabout ...
.... the car in the inner left most lane is to exit at the first exit only!

How some people don't know how to use the car's signal/indicator light...
... the indicator was designed to indicate where the car gonna turn and it is free!!! no need to pay

How some people think it is "cool" to use the fog-light when it is daymnd blinding bright!
.. the normal indicator is sufficient for our local road, the fog light is to be used when it is FOGGY!! only ... thr bright red light esp. made it difficult to distinguish either u r breaking or not!

How some people think it is "safe" to drive slow at the right lane, and over take at the shoulder (lane)...
... it is actually dangerous to drive slow at the right lane ... and stooooopeed to drive thru on the shoulder lane during traffic ... unless you are one of the emergency vehicle then that is another case ...

How come there are U-Turn at the highway/motorway ... but no U-Turn at the traffic light?
... tell me and proof me wrong that it is actually safe to make a u-turn at the highway/motorway during normal hours ... but I know and can prove it that is safe to make a u-turn at a traffic light/junction!!

Still so many questions... to be pondered upon ... but I'll just leave it as it is for now... unless u all want more....

.. otherwise.... go and PUNder yourself ...
